All the usual
vaccines are offered. We also offer the intestinal parasite test,
canine heartworm test, and feline viral test (feline leukemia and feline
immunodeficiency virus) at a low cost.
The
lower price is available because of the stream-lined nature of the clinic. If
you are not a regular client at our hospital, please bring any of your pet’s
prior records.
If your pet is sick or needs an examination, you will need an appointment
with one of our veterinarians rather than a vaccine clinic visit. Remember, all
pets should receive a complete physical examination, heartworm examination and
fecal examination on an annual basis. Geriatric pets should have
an examination every 6 months.
Please note:
- Animals with a history of vaccination reactions should not be seen
during the vaccination clinic as they need extra attention and
precautions.
- Animals with aggressive temperaments should schedule an
appointment at another time as there may be a crowd during clinic time.
A dangerous situation could erupt if the pet feels stressed by the other
animals and such patients require extra care.
WHAT VACCINES SHOULD I GET FOR MY
PET?
Vaccine recommendations for an individual pet depend on many factors:
exposure to diseases, common diseases in our area, stress factors present
etc.
Both the American Association of
Feline Practioners and the American American Animal Hospital Association have
published guidelines for vaccination. Vaccinations are divided into “core”
vaccines which every pet should have, and “non-core” vaccines which a pet should
have depending on their exposure risk.
FOR CATS core vaccines are the
FRCP (Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calici virus,
Panleukopenia) and RABIES vaccine. Rabies vaccine is a core
vaccine and is required by law in the state of Georgia because Rabies is
transmissible to people through bite wounds and is present in our
community.
The FRCP vaccine we administer is demonstrated to be effective for three
years if they have received the initial and booster vaccinations.
The PureVax feline rabies vaccine that we administer is demonstrated to be effective for three years if they have received the initial vaccination. If your cat goes outside, we recommend the Feline Leukemia Vaccine
yearly. We are currently using the PureVax Recombinant Leukemia vaccine that
is given subcutaneously. We recommend this vaccine to decrease the risk from
vaccine induced fibrosarcoma.
We do not recommend vaccinating for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus - also
known as feline AIDS) or FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis).
FOR DOGS, core vaccines are the
DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo virus,
Parainfluenza) and the RABIES vaccine. The DHPP
vaccine we administer is demonstrated to be effective for three years if they
have received the initial vaccinations. We recommend the 3-year
Rabies vaccine for any dog over 1 year of age as long as they have received at
least one Rabies vaccination in the past. Since dogs do go outside
for walks, to dog parks, for grooming, to the vet’s office etc. we recommend oral
vaccine against Kennel Cough (Bordetella) for all our canine
patients. The oral kennel cough vaccine is very effective
but only lasts for 6-9 months. We recommend the Kennel Cough (Bordetella) vaccine every 6 months.
